SCHOOL COUNCIL
Our School Council at Sir Wilfrid Laurier School (SWL) is an important partner in creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students. It provides an opportunity for families to share their perspectives, contribute ideas, and work collaboratively with school leadership to strengthen our school community and support student success. Together, we can ensure that family voices help inform our decisions and shape a positive experience for every student.
The next school council meeting will take place online on October 27th at 6:00pm. This meeting will be our annual general meeting and we are seeking parents who are interested in fulfilling the following roles:
School Council Chair – The school council chair needs to be a parent of a student in the school. The chair actively encourages others to become involved in meaningful ways and organizes both programs and people. Some typical duties include:
· ensuring school council is represented at Community of School Councils (COSC) meetings;
· chairing and organizing meetings;
· communicating regularly with the school principal;
· ensuring regular communication with the school community;
· ensuring an annual report is submitted to the Board of Trustees; and
· staying informed about policies that impact school councils
School Council Vice-Chair – This role may be shared with the chair through the creation of co-chairing positions. The vice-chair assists the chair and prepares to become the school council chair in the future. Some typical duties include:
· chairing meetings in the absence of the school council chair;
· helping to prepare for school council meetings; and
· preparing to assume role of chair in the future.
Secretary – The secretary records meeting minutes and ensures accuracy of minutes. Some typical duties include:
· acting as recorder at meetings and ensuring the minutes accurately reflect discussion;
· keeping minutes, correspondence, and records (including copies of school council annual reports) filed in an orderly, publicly accessible fashion, in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act;
· possessing working knowledge of school council bylaws/operating procedures; and
· distributing meeting and event notices.
Treasurer – If the school council is handling money, the treasurer keeps an accurate record of funds and financial transactions. Some typical duties include:
· keeping accurate records of all financial transactions;
· reporting to school council on the receipt and expenditure of funds; and
· ensuring records are available upon the request of the school district.
We look forward to seeing you at the online meeting on October 27th at 6:00pm. Click here to join the meeting.
STUDENT SAFETY
We are asking for your support in reminding students about the importance of making safe choices when crossing streets on their way to and from school.
Please take a few moments to speak with your child about being aware of their surroundings, choosing appropriate places to cross, using designated crosswalks and traffic signals, and watching for vehicles before stepping onto the road. It is especially important that students avoid crossing in areas where drivers may not expect pedestrians or where their actions could create unsafe situations for themselves or others.
Student safety is a shared responsibility, and reinforcing these expectations at home helps us keep our school community safe. Thank you for taking the time to discuss pedestrian safety with your child and for partnering with us to encourage responsible choices in the community.
HEALTHY HUNGER
Healthy Hunger at Sir Wilfrid Laurier is now open for orders! Our school hosts hot lunch options from a variety of restaurants throughout the year. To order these lunches, go to https://healthyhunger.ca , create an account, add your student, select their homeroom and you will then be able to see the dates and restaurants we are offering. Make sure to get your orders in 5 days before the lunch day.
ATHLETICS
Soccer and Basketball Schedules are posted on the SWL Website under Athletics
Game & Practice Schedules
Students are required to check with their coaches for game and practice schedules. The office does not have a list of schedule or time changes.
Spectators at After School Games
We are looking forward to another great season and cheering on our students as they compete in various athletics events after school. CBE middle schools have set similar expectations for games that promote safety, respect, and a positive experience for all. They include:
- All visiting student spectators/athletes must be under the direct supervision of a designated adult for the duration of the games. The only exception is for the first basketball game of the evening here at SWL. Students can stay for that game without an adult supervisor but must arrange for transportation home at 5: 15 as they will not be able to stay for later games without adult supervision.
- Student spectators, at away games, without parental supervision will be directed by the hosting school administration to leave the building.
- Cell phones must remain in bags. No photos or recordings can be made by students. This is a privacy concern for the athletes from all teams.
- Parents are asked to be mindful if they are taking photos or videos of their child. The privacy of other student athletes should be considered.
- All spectators - students or adults - are expected to cheer and support players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians in a positive manner.
- Disrespectful behaviours will be addressed by school administration promptly and may result in spectators being directed to leave the game and the school building.
- Parents/guardians who bring younger children are responsible at all times for their direct supervision. Please ensure that they are not wandering the halls and playing on PE equipment in the gym/on stage.
These expectations have been reviewed with all of our students in school. Please review with your children as well. We thank you in advance for your ongoing support.
We are excited to welcome our students to another exciting Sir Wilfrid Laurier Lightning sports season! It’s going to be a fun and active time for everyone.
We want to share important information about students watching home games:
- Students can stay from 4:15 to 5:15 and watch the first home game of the evening without a parent or guardian.
- For all other games that night, students must either leave the school or be with a parent/guardian while watching.
Thank you for helping us keep all students safe and for supporting our Lightning teams!
